On the Radar for 2018: Mystery and Thriller

These are a few of the mysteries and thrillers coming out early in 2018 that I'm really looking forward to. Some established veterans, a few sophomore efforts, and a couple of debuts I can't wait to read! I hope to post reviews on most of them in the next few months.

Robicheaux by James Lee Burke: January 2, 2018

Latest in the long running Dave Robicheaux series. Robicheaux finds that he may have committed the homicide he's investigating. Atmospheric mystery set in small-town Louisiana. Looks interesting!

The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor: January 9, 2018

This one looks fun! Children in a small English village with a secret code of chalk men. Dead body turns up. Alternating between two timelines, between the children and the same kids as adults with a mystery linking the two. Comparisons to It and Stand by Me are really intriguing.

Light it Up by Nick Petrie: January 16, 2018

Latest Peter Ash thriller. This one finds Ash helping a friend provide security to a modern cannabis operation in Denver. A series of hijackings puts Ash in the crosshairs and headed for a showdown with the criminals. Each entry in this series gets more and more praise!

City of Endless Night by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child: January 2018

The latest in the long-running and popular Agent Pendergast series, City of Endless Night takes him back to where it all started; New York City working a case with Vincent D'Agosta. It starts with a search for a missing girl and quickly goes south when her headless body turns up. Something evil is in the city and it's up to Agent Pendergast to find it. This is one of the best fictional characters ever created!

The Night Market by Jonathan Moore: January 16, 2018

The Night Market is already drawing high praise. A near future thriller set in San Francisco. Inspector Ross Carver is investigating a strange homicide when he is hustled away from the crime scene, decontaminated and wakes up two days later with a chunk of his memory gone. Now he has to unravel what happened. Comparisons to Blake Crouch, China Mieville and Lauren Beukes are enough to get me reading!

Hellbent by Gregg Hurwitz: January 30, 2018

Hellbent is the third Orphan X novel. The series started off with a bang in Orphan X and continued with The Nowhere Man. Now Evan Smoak gets a call from the man who trained him and turned him into the deadly weapon that he is. His assignment is to protect the last recruit to the Orphan program and save him from those trying to end the program and everyone associated with it. Great character, great series and a writer at the top of his game!

Into the Black Nowhere by Meg Gardiner: January 30, 2018

In UNSUB, Meg Gardiner introduced us to FBI agent Caitlin Hendrix in a case inspired by the Zodiac killer. Now Caitlin must solve the case of disappearing women in Texas in a case inspired by Ted Bundy. Gardiner takes you deep inside the minds of killer and pursuer in these books that will give you actual chills!

This is What Happened by Mick Herron: January 30, 2018

Mick Herron is an award winning writer. Here he introduces you to Londoner Maggie Barnes. Someone who could vanish with no one the wiser. This makes her just the sort of person MI5 can use to infiltrate and stop a threat that puts all of Britain at risk. Another book getting great early buzz!

Force of Nature by Jane Harper: February 6, 2018

Last year's The Dry introduced us to Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk in one of the best novels of the year period. It's still raking in the awards. Now Falk must solve the mystery of what happened when five women walk into the wilderness on a corporate retreat and only four walk out. If this book is half as good as its predecessor, it will be the book of the year again!

The Deceivers by Alex Berenson: February 6, 2018

Alex Berenson is out with another John Wells book. One of the best written action heroes around. This time, Wells is on the trail of sleeper cells, sniper teams and false flag operations. Not to mention a Russian plot to take over the government. You'll never go wrong with a John Wells book. Consistently exciting and well-written.

Sunburn by Laura Lippman: February 20, 2018

How cool does this look? Lippman is out with a psychological suspense novel that really turns up the heat. Two people drawn together in a hot affair. Can it survive when a body turns up? Comparisons to classics like The Postman Always Rings Twice have me dying to read this one!

Sirens by Joseph Knox: February 20, 2018

Another debut novel from across the pond. This is the first in the Aidan Waits series. Aidan is tasked with getting close to charismatic criminal Zain Carver who attracts women who have a habit of turning up dead around him. Can Aidan save the next victim? Or even himself? Comparisons to Tana French, Don Winslow and Dennis Lehane make this look like one worth reading!

The French Girl by Lexie Elliot: February 20, 2018

Another debut novel. This time six Oxford University students are vacation in France. A beautiful french girl adds tension to the close-knit group and disappears after a big fight on the last night of the vacation. Ten years later, her body is found and buried secrets are about to surface. This looks like a tense atmospheric thriller!

The Terminal List by Jack Carr: March 6, 2018

This is the number one thriller on my list of debuts to read in 2018. A navy SEAL whose team is murdered by his own government sets out on the trail of vengeance. This looks like it's going to blow the roof off! Fans of Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, and one of my new favorites, Matthew Betley (whose own new book comes out in May) are going to be lining up for this one.

 Skyjack by K. J. Howe: April 3, 2018

On the heels of this years debut thriller that everyone wants to get their hands on is the second book from the author of last year's debut thriller that everyone was waiting to get their hands on. Thea Paris returns in Skyjack. This time Thea is wrapped up in a kidnap/skyjack. Thea and her team must come up with a rescue and stop a conspiracy involving the CIA, the Vatican and has roots in World War II. Howe's Kidnap and Ransom series has a great heroine and the makings of a strong series!

A Necessary Evil by Abir Mukherjee: April 3, 2018

Abir Mukherjee follows up his critical acclaimed A Rising Man with another Sam Wyndham historical mystery novel set in 1920's India. When the heir to the throne is assassinated, it's up to Captain Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee to find the murderer before he finds them. I love mysteries in settings I don't read about all the time and this sure fits the bill. Can't wait to read this one. (And I love the cover!)

Whispers of the Dead by Spencer Kope: April 17, 2018

Spencer Kope follows up last years debut, Collecting the Dead, with a new story of "Steps" Craig, an FBI tracker with some unique and disturbing gifts. This one starts with a pair of severed feet left in the house of a federal judge. Now the FBI's Special Tracking Unit is on the hunt of a new serial killer. Mystery, thrills, and a light touch of the supernatural blend together for a fun new series!

Warning Light by David Ricciardi: April 17, 2017

Another debut novel getting great reviews. This one introduces Zac Miller, a CIA desk jockey forced into a more active role. He thinks he's up to the task, at least until he finds himself on the run across the Middle East and Europe, hunted by Islamic Revolutionary Guards and his own teammates. This one is high up on my list and if the buzz is right, there's another new action hero on the horizon!
