Beyond the Empire by K.B. Wagers

K.B. Wagers started the Indranan War trilogy with a bang in Behind the Throne, continued the action in After the Crown and brings everything to a roaring conclusion in Beyond the Empire.

Hail Bristol is a former gunrunner turned reluctant Empress. She fled her family in pursuit of the man who murdered her father. She turned to gunrunning when she lost his trail, only to be dragged back to her former life when the murder of more family members leave her as the only heir. Constant assassination attempts, political unrest at home and overtures of war from neighboring planetary empires keep her life in constant chaos. By the beginning of Beyond the Empire, Hail is facing a coup at home and the prospect of a full scale war with the neighboring Saxon Empire. She gathers the forces loyal to her, both within the Empire and from some of her former more disreputable associates and sets out to right past wrongs. She’ll have her crown back, end the war with the Saxons, and find the man who killed her family or die trying. It’s never wise to bet against her.

This is one of the best sci-fi action series of the last 10 years. Each book is a standout and Beyond the Empire is a tremendous conclusion. Hail is an amazing character as are her closest bodyguards Emmory and Zin, Po-Sin and Fase, the mysterious alien Farian and many others. The action just keeps coming, the political intrigue is fascinating and the characters leap off the page. Hail bears the full emotional weight of everything that has happened to her. One of her greatest strengths is making decisions she knows she must even when the consequences are devastating. This is a great series and essential reading for any fan of sci-fi. Highly recommended.

I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of this book from the publisher.
