There Before the Chaos by K.B. Wagers
K. B. Wagers is one of the most exciting new voices in science fiction and There Before The Chaos proves that every new book she writes is a must read. Chaos is the first book in the new Farian War series set in the same universe as her previous Indranan War trilogy. Hail Bristol, former gunrunner, reluctant princess and now Empress of Indrana has ended a civil war and brought peace to her corner of the galaxy. As she continues leading efforts to rebuild her Empire, she is asked by one of Indrana’s oldest allies to intervene in their military crisis. The Farians, even though they have long been allies, remain deeply mysterious and their war with the Shen likewise shrouded in intrigue. Agreeing to intervene could put Indrana squarely in the middle of a galactic military crisis and refusing could be equally dangerous. If Hail doesn’t navigate this carefully, all-out galactic war could be the result.
As with her previous books, Wagers demonstrates a knack for exciting action sequences, great political drama and outstanding characterizations. Strong, well-rounded characters that you care deeply about heighten the tension when they are placed in danger. Hail’s relationship with her guards, particularly Emory and Zin, gunrunners from her former life such as Hao and Johar, and many others are used to illustrate the depth of feeling that Hail has as well as the steel inside her when tough decisions are called for. She inspires fierce loyalty and gives it in return.
Chaos spends a lot of time navigating the politics both internal and external to the empire. There are some action-intensive sequences early in the book, but it is not until later that things really take off. Fortunately, Hail Bristol is a trouble magnet and it isn’t long until things are spinning out of control. Wagers packs a lot into her books and her skill in mixing humor and lighter moments with jaw-dropping action helps make the pages fly by. The world-building is excellent and each book reveals more about the Indranan Empire and the other inhabitants of this universe. You can’t do better than this. Highly recommended.
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher.
