Lark the Herald Angels Sing by Donna Andrews
Donna Andrews delivers another entertaining Christmas mystery with Lark the Herald Angels Sing. Meg Langslow finds herself directing the annual church Christmas pageant and herding a bunch of high-energy children through rehearsal when a real baby shows up in the manger. The baby has a note pinned to it saying that her name is Lark and implying that Meg’s brother Rob is the father. This throws a wrench into Rob’s plans to propose to his fiancee.
Meg dives into to solve the mystery, find the baby’s mother and clear her brother’s name. It isn’t long until she stumbles onto a much bigger problem involving murder and more skullduggery in neighboring Clay County. Tensions are at an all-time high between Caerphilly and Clay County. Now Meg has to ease tensions, save the peace and make sure everyone is safe at home in time for Christmas. In other words, just your typical Caerphilly/Meg Langslow Christmas.
I’ve made reading a Donna Andrews mystery, particularly a Christmas mystery an annual Christmas tradition. There is nothing more entertaining and satisfying than spending time with Meg, her large, odd and talented family, and all the useful and wacky townfolk of Caerphilly. Andrews will have you laughing as you race to turn the pages and get to the bottom of these mysteries. The characters manage to grow and evolve, but not too much. Ekaterina, the hotel owner with hidden depths, particularly shines in this book. Andrews also continues to add new family members and townfolks with just the skills needed to keep Caerphilly humming.
The setup is always inventive, the crimes thorny and interesting, and solving them is a fun and creative adventure. Do yourself a favor and curl up with Lark the Herald Angels Sing and enjoy Christmas all over again, at least until you turn the last page. Highly recommended for new and old fans alike.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
