Dachshund Through The Snow by David Rosenfelt
David Rosenfelt returns with another Andy Carpenter Christmas mystery, Dachshund Through The Snow. Christmas starts earlier and lasts longer each year in the Carpenter household. One of Andy's wife Lori’s Christmas traditions is to help fulfill wishes from those in need. She comes across a wish from a young boy named Danny who wants a sweater for his dachshund and for his missing father to come home.
It turns out that Danny's father is wanted in connection with a 14-year-old murder. A murder he swears he didn't commit. Once again Andy is dragged out of his unsuccessful retirement to defend Danny's father. Along for the ride are Andy's usual cast of colorful characters. Along the way, Andy also gets roped into defending a police dog and suing for the dog’s early retirement.
Andy has never had less to work with in trying to clear his client. His diligent digging along with that of his investigative team at least gives them a fighting chance of keeping their client from spending the rest of his life in prison. It's going to take a Christmas miracle though to win this one.
These books are filled with humor, intrigue and fascinating characters -- none more so than Andy himself. It's the familiar characters that make these books such a joy to return to time and time again. Fortuitous breaks play a part in the case, but Rosenfelt always does a good job of leading you down the path to a successful conclusion with plenty of twists and turns and quite a few laughs along the way.
Grover Gardner is perfectly suited to these characters and this series. He captures Andy's snarky sense of humor and conveys all the quirks of the rest of Andy’s team, particularly the taciturn Marcus. Time flies when you're having fun and that is amply demonstrated while listening to this book.
Rosenfeld's many fans will be delighted with this latest entry and any fan of a good cozy mystery will love picking it up as well. Highly recommended
